Wandering Wonderings of Water
Freshman Year 2015
In this project, we visited many places all over San Diego each week and explored the area. We made a wondering each week and would research more into depth of a specific thing we found interesting in the pace we went to, which were called discoveries.. After several weeks, we were put into groups of 2 based on similarities of an interest in a wondering we had and began our research. My partner and I worked to explain the effects of technology and how it overpowers nature. In the end, we had a poster that explained the preference over being outside than on technology and how it affected happiness. The information was from a survey of both our classes, and in the end, being outside seemed to make people happier than on tech.
Overall Project
In the beginning of the project, we read a book titled The Blue Mind and discussed its content. The book explained the emotions and personal ties people have being near or in water. This book ended up being an important aspect in my groups research, as well as the book Last Child in the Woods. On each field trip, we would learn more about water and its importance on the ecosystem, which was an addition to our research. For the graph we made, we needed information so we sent a survey to our team. We asked how many hours per week they spend outside and on technology, as well as their level of happiness from 0 to 10. We then graphed it on a website named Desmos and were sort of surprised to the final information. It turned out that people who spent more time outside were happier than those who spent more time on technology, which further proved our belief for the need to be outside. We also worked on a thesis in humanities as wells as our research. Our work was all put onto a poster template in photoshop which we printed and presented at exhibition as well as a story about a time in our lives that connected to our topic which was made into a booklet.
Wonderings & Discoveries
Nassco/Barrio Logan
I noticed a lot of tracks all over the shipyard. I wonder what the length of the tracks are? What is the width of the tracks? When were the tracks built? Can the tracks carry up to certain weight without being crushed? How many cranes go along the tracks? How many cranes are there in NASSCO? When did they build the cranes and were they built in NASSCO? What are the tracks made of? - Stella Zaragoza

San Diego River
I noticed the water was awfully murky, a greenish brown, and had some sort of shiny fluid floating on the water. I wonder how much of the fluid was in the water? Is the fluid oil and soap? How does the fluid affect the river? Are there any animals that can live in contaminated river? How badly contaminated is the river? How could the river be cleaned? Could the river be cleaned? - Stella Zaragoza
