11th Grade Projects
California Innocence Project
Junior Year, Spring Semester 2018
During the Spring of 2019, we explored criminal justice through the lens of wrongful convictions. “Why are people wrongfully convicted?” and “What can we do about it?” are some of the questions asked. In pursuit of answers, we collaborated with the California Innocence Project (CIP), headquartered locally at California Western School of Law. The CIP is the state’s leading organization committed to exonerating wrongful convictions. The CIP provided case files of currently incarcerated individuals. The files contained legal records and letters written by prisoners who claim to have been wrongly convicted. After analyzing the files, we wrote formal recommendations for the CIP and gave presentations at California Western. As a follow up to our work with the CIP, we broadened our investigations to study and then tackle a broad swath of criminal justice issues. We wrote short fictional pieces inspired by the particular problem we researched as well as learning about behavioral issues found in prisoners
Junior Year, Fall Semester 2018
The Food Equity Project was a project that gave us students the opportunity to collaborate with and learn from various food & health related organizations all over San Diego. This project that allowed us to develop a better insight on food disparities & how these organizations work their way to alleviate the number of issues relating to that.
Junior Year, Fall Semester 2018
This semester, we explored this question of what we can do about environmental devastation caused by humans. We studied climate change on a local and global scale, which then led to more research. Our research first began at Famosa Slough, a wetland, where we studied the ecological impacts of climate change and pollution. This grew into studying the larger effects of climate change, such as coral bleaching and droughts. After extensive research on the impacts of climate change, we began to look into solutions. We applied philosophical concepts to assess the morality and effectiveness of a wide range of solutions, all of which that have the potential to help us address the issues of climate change.
